The old fortress and the best rooftop view in Khiva

The Kuhna Ark is Khiva's old citadel, a walled complex inside the walled city that once housed the khan's residence, reception hall, mint, and mosque behind its own fortified gate. It functioned as the seat of power for the Khanate of Khiva, separate from and predating much of the religious architecture that now surrounds it.

Its watchtower, added later, is the single best vantage point over Ichan Kala's rooftops and the surrounding desert, and it is one of the few spots in the old city where the whole layout becomes legible at once.

History

The fortress in its current form developed over the 17th to 19th centuries, expanding to include a summer mosque, a reception courtyard for receiving guests and conducting state business, and quarters connected to the khan's household. Its defensive walls and gate reflect its original purpose as a stronghold as much as a residence.

The watchtower, built in the 19th century, was reportedly used both to monitor the surrounding approaches to the city and to catch the first sight of the khan's returning caravans, a dual military and ceremonial role typical of the period.

Visiting

Entry is included on the combined Ichan Kala ticket, and the climb to the watchtower is short but narrow, worth timing for late afternoon when the light angles across the old city's rooftops. From the top, HOWZ Hotel's own courtyard and terrace are visible among the low roofline just beyond the western wall.

Because the Kuhna Ark sits roughly in the middle of Ichan Kala, it pairs naturally with a loop that starts and ends at HOWZ Hotel, taking in Kalta Minor Minaret on the way there and the Pahlavon Mahmud Mausoleum on the way back.
